Physician Specializations

There are many areas a doctor can specialize in while attending medical school. Each doctor spends many years training in his or her area of specialty to become an expert in one's chosen field. This list provides simple definitions of the main areas of specialty.

Memorial Hospital works with physicians who provide many of these specializations. Specializations noted with an "*" are available at our facility.

Allergy/Immunology
Disorders due to allergy and diseases of the immune system.
 
Anesthesiology*
Administration of various forms of anesthesia during surgery or diagnostic procedures to cause loss of feeling or sensation.

Cardiology*
Diagnosis and treatment of the heart and circulatory system.

Dermatology
Medical discipline concerned with the treatment of the heart and circulatory system.

Ear, Nose, & Throat (Otolaryngology)
Diagnosis and treatment of disease, injury and illness for patients of any age.

Emergency Medicine*
Care for patient requiring immediate medical attention and urgent medical treatment.

Family Practice*
Diagnosis and treatment of disease, injury and illness for patients of any age.

Gastroenterology*
Diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the stomach, esophagus, intestines and liver.

General Surgery*


Internal Medicine*
Diagnosis and treatment of diseases, injury and illness in adults.

Neurology*
Diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the nervous system.

Obstetrics/Gynecology*
OB: Care of women during pregnancy, childbirth and the interval immediately following.
GYN: Diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the female reproductive organs.

Oncology*
Treatment of tumors, cancers and blood disorders.

Ophthalmology
Diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the eye.

Orthopedic Surgery*
Diagnosis and treatment of disorders and diseases of the muscular and skeletal systems.

Pathology*
The specialty of medicine dealing with changes in organs, tissues, cells and alterations in body chemistry to aid in diagnosing disease and determining treatment.

Pediatrics*
Prevention, diagnosis and treatment of children’s diseases.

Physiatry
Prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease or injury using physical agents such as light, heat, cold, water, electricity, therapeutic exercise and mechanical apparatus.

Plastic Surgery
Reconstructive or cosmetic surgery intended to improve function, correct defects and improve appearance.

Podiatry
Diagnosis, treatment and prevention of conditions of the feet. 

Psychiatry
Diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders.

Pulmonology*
Diagnosis and treatment of diseases and disorders of the lungs and respiratory system.

Radiation Oncology
Application of radioactive materials to treat tumors or diseases.

Radiology (Diagnostic Imaging)
Use of radiant energy, including x-rays, radium, cobalt and nuclear medicine applications in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases.

Rheumatology
Diagnosis and treatment of inflammatory diseases and conditions of the joints and connective tissues.

Sports Medicine
Diagnosis and treatment of illnesses and injuries related to sports, in addition to keeping people with sport-related injuries active.

Urgent Care
Treatment of minor illness or injury, including bruises, sprains, strains, broken bones, fever, coughs, sore throats, earaches, cuts and burns.

Urology
Diagnosis and treatment of diseases or disorders of the kidneys, bladder, urethra, urethra and male reproductive organs.
